About the Artist
Using expressive color and light, I am a contemporary impressionist aiming to capture the stunning and dramatic beauty of the sea, sky, and hills of the Monterey Peninsula that I call home.
Read My Story
My love and appreciation of the natural world began as a child - hiking and camping in Big Sur almost every weekend when I was young, and continuing as our family traveled the world, living in both Africa and Europe. As a young adult, after earning
a BS in Geology from Duke University, I spent almost a year traveling around South America. I now consider myself a citizen of the world, but have made my home on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula.
I recently retired after many years doing landscape design as well as architectural design and drafting, photography and fine art sales. During this time, I have honed my skills as an artist both in person and through virtual studies.
My process begins with a compositional sketch and a bold block-in of the darkest values using vivid, saturated color. I then move into lighter tones, applying thick, confident brushstrokes in an alla prima approach. I avoid white during the early
stages to preserve vibrancy, layering it later to create light and texture. Through expressive color, contrasting values and color temperature, I aim to lead the eye through depth and atmosphere, inviting the viewer to linger within the scene and
feel its energy.
My medium of choice is oil paints, although I often use gouache or watercolors while traveling. I love to paint plein air with all of the joy and challenges that come with the changing light and atmospheric conditions. When painting outdoors, I feel fully
alive and at peace, and I strive to share that feeling with the viewer.
